Personal Information Collection
When you visit L.J. Smith.com and you have not otherwise identified yourself (e.g., via registration with a L.J. Smith Site), our web server automatically recognizes your domain name, but not your e-mail address. We collect the domain name and monitor general site use and traffic patterns to improve our web site and the products and services we offer. L.J. Smith uses web server logs to collect data for metric purposes. Examples of the types of data collected on the logs are IP addresses, referral pages, date and time of Site access, and Site visited. We may use collected data to customize the content and/or layout of our pages for each individual visitor.
The information you provide to L.J. Smith, as well as the information we have collected about you indirectly, may be used by L.J. Smith for marketing purposes. Before we do so, however, we will offer you the opportunity to choose whether or not to have your information used in this way. You may at any time choose not to receive marketing materials from us by following the unsubscribe instructions included in each e-mail you may receive, by indicating so when we call you, or by contacting us directly (please refer to “Questions and Contact” below).
In some cases, L.J. Smith requests personally identifiable information from you in order to satisfy the underlying transaction or purpose of your accessing the Site. Examples of personally identifiable information include names, e-mail addresses, mailing addresses, and the like. Please note that we do not consider aggregated information, from which personally identifiable information has been removed, to be private.
Cookies, Beacons, Tracers and Other Technologies
As mentioned above, we collect information from your visits to our Web sites to help us gather statistics about our Web sites usage and effectiveness, personalize your experience on our sites, and tailor our interactions with you.
In some instances, we use tracking scripts or tracers that recognize a unique identifier from a cookie placed on your hard drive by another website. These are used by L.J. Smith solely to gauge the success of our own advertising. For instance, we may use a tracer to determine whether you visit our employment pages after visiting a resume or career site where L.J. Smith placed a banner ad. We do not use tracers to gather information on your use of the internet unrelated to L.J. Smith. Please note that L.J. Smith does not use tracers to identify your personal information, and you remain anonymous unless and until you choose to register.
Some of our business partners might set Web beacons and cookies on our site. We have no access or control of these third party tracking technologies.
If you request something from L.J. Smith, for example, a product or service, a callback, or specific marketing materials, we will use the information you provide to fulfill your request. To help us do this, we may share information with others, for instance, L.J. Smith's business partners, financial institutions, shipping companies, or postal or government authorities, such as Customs authorities, involved in fulfillment. In connection with a transaction, we may also contact you as part of our customer satisfaction surveys or for market research purposes.
We do not treat your general interaction with L.J. Smith.com (e.g., submission of suggestions) as confidential. However, certain L.J. Smith Sites do conduct transactions for which heightened security is appropriate. For instance, certain L.J. Smith Sites encrypt your personal information (e.g., for transmission of credit card data), so that only appropriate personnel are able to decode your information. Note that most internet browsers also offer security alerts that permit you to determine whether your transmissions are protected.
We intend to protect your personal information and to maintain its accuracy. L.J. Smith implements reasonable physical, administrative and technical safeguards to help us protect your personal information from unauthorized access, use and disclosure. For example, we encrypt certain sensitive personal information such as credit card information when we transmit such information over the Internet. We also require that our suppliers protect such information from unauthorized access, use and disclosure.

We do not rent, sell, or trade any personally identifiable information about you (e.g., e-mail addresses) to third parties. Certain L.J. Smith Sites may disclose information to third parties assisting us in processing a transaction requested by you (e.g., credit card service providers). In order to cooperate with legitimate governmental requests, subpoenas, or court orders, to protect L.J. Smith and/or L.J. Smith's systems and customers, or to ensure the integrity and operation of L.J. Smith and/or L.J. Smith's business and systems, L.J. Smith and/or L.J.
